Arestin® Antibiotic Therapy For Periodontal Infections
After deep cleaning is performed to address periodontal problems, we may assess that local delivery of antibiotics (Arestin®) would contribute to better control of gum disease.
Arestin® is an antibiotic that contains Minocycline Hydrochloride. It comes in the form of a powder that has been placed in microspheres. One milligram of these tiny microspheres can be used to more effectively treat periodontal disease.
Microspheres are tiny particles that are even smaller than a grain of sand. They are not visible to the naked eye. They’re filled with the antibiotics that can be released over time. This helps kill bacteria that lives in the periodontal pockets for up to twenty-one days. Arestin® is placed inside the pockets with periodontal infection after deep cleaning.
Arestin® antibiotic therapy significantly reduced the size of the pockets, leaving less room for bacteria to reside and grow. Periodontal disease can cause bleeding, bone loss, and ultimately the loss of teeth. It is an active infection and has been linked to heart disease, diabetes and certain forms of cancer.
