One of the most common treatments for broken, chipped or discolored teeth is dental fillings. Dental fillings are the materials with which the damaged part of the teeth can be restored. Up to early to mid 1990’s when the composite fillings came into the market, amalgam fillings were used very frequently. Even today many of the dentists use amalgam fillings (silver or mercury fillings) to treat broken, decayed or chipped teeth.
Silver fillings contain mercury and are used to fill broken or chipped teeth. Research indicates that the very presence of mercury makes these amalgam fillings dangerous and could potentially cause risk to the patient’s health. Amalgam fillings contain about 50% mercury. It has been observed recently that the vapors of mercury arising during chewing of food with teeth that contain amalgam fillings pose a possible threat of serious health complications.
It is very important to know the dangers that can be caused by mercury, silver dental fillings. The dangers associated with mercury, silver dental fillings are neurotoxicity as mercury is closely associated with this illness.
