What is a toothache?

A toothache often involves pain of the teeth and/or jaw resulting from a dental cavity, dental infection, a broken tooth, an exposed root, gum disease, disease of the jaw joint, or tension/spasms of the jaw and facial muscles used for chewing.

The degree of pain can range from mild sensitivity to severe pain. Pain could be felt in sinuses and ears as well. The onset of pain may be caused by temperature differences (hot/cold) or chewing. Common causes of oral pain include blow to the face, carries (cavities), dental abscess, gum disease, broken or cracked tooth, temporomandibular joint disease (TMJ), Pericornitis infection associated with wisdom teeth impaction and bruxism (grinding teeth mostly during sleeping).

We conduct a variety of tests to determine the cause of toothache. Contact us for an appointment.
