Advantage of Dental Implant over Bridge

The debate over whether a dental implant is better than a bridge has been put to rest with recent innovations in dentistry. Bridges and Dentures were the predecessors of implants, and it is time to move on!

Dental implants, for all practical purposes, are exactly like the natural teeth we have – except that they are artificially implanted. Once they are put in place, we treat them just like we treat our natural teeth and they act exactly like normal teeth. So no more difficulty cleaning under the bridges, wobbling of partials and clicking of dentures!

The most important advantage a dental implant has over a bridge is that it stands alone and does not need the support of the adjacent teeth. While putting a bridge in place, the adjacent teeth are modified (capped or crowned to be exact) to support the new addition, and that can lead to future complications. However, an implant is fitted directly into the bone – which earlier supported the lost tooth – so it does not need the support of adjacent teeth… So it is a much better bet!

Dental implants are also recommended for people with multiple lost teeth. They can all be put onto a bridge that is implanted into the bone, and the same can also be done for the whole set of teeth. Implants have the significant advantage that your smile remains unchanged and unless you tell people, no one will realize that there is an implant in your mouth.

In rare cases an implant may not be the best option for you. Past or present medical history, level and quality of bone, certain medications all play a role in deciding whether or not you are a good candidate for dental implant(s). During your professional consultation with Dr. Torabi, all of these issues are discussed. If it is determined that implants are not the best choice of treatment for you, don’t worry-there are many other restorative options to replace your missing teeth.

For majority of people choosing a dental implant over a bridge is a no-brainer!
