Even though many of these studies have shown such evidence, the findings have certainly been conflicting at best. Many studies have shown that there is an increased chance that babies will not develop completely in the womb if the pregnant mother has periodontal disease and the bacterial infections associated with it.
There have also been reports that show a relationship between this disease and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Just like all types of infections, periodontal disease can pose a risk to the health of an unborn baby. For this reason, all women should be concerned if they have a disease while pregnant. The troubeling issue for most oral health provders is that about 70% of the population have some degree of gum disease and most are not aware of it.
Periodontal disease is gum disease. In most cases, these disorders are known as gingivitis or periodontitis. This disease is caused by plaque build up on the surfaces of teeth including root surfaces which cannot be cleaned by brushing and flossing. If left untreated, this build-up will become calcified (called calculus) which causes irritation of the tissues surrounding teeth and eventually lead to bone loss. Calculus can be removed professionally by using ultrasonic, and other devices.
Gum disease should be addressed as soon as possible by all but especially by pregnant women, because women with gum disease commonly develop excess biological fluids while pregnant. These excess fluids can induce early labor resulting in low birth weight among other health issues.
The degree of gum disease should dictate the level of concern for expecting mothers . Clinical trials have shown that there is a relationship between pregnancy & periodontal disease, but it is certainly not a clear association.
