Importance of oral hygiene during pregnancy
In the frenzy during pregnancy, oral health is not given the due importance. It has been proved in research that sometimes this affects the baby’s weight and can result in premature delivery in some extreme cases. Women tend to eat more during pregnancy because of the excess cravings and hence, dental health needs to be at the top of your priorities.
Because of the increase in hormone levels, gums and teeth are also affected during pregnancy. During the earlier part, common dental problems like bleeding and swollen gums are often found in women. This is known as gingivitis and should be treated immediately before it becomes a persistent problem. This could even lead to Periodontitis, which can even cause teeth to fall out because of loose gums. The bones in the gums become weak because of the bacteria. The infection will soon spread through your blood and before you know, it will affect the baby’s and your health. It is also a fact that these bacteria travel to your mammary and nearby glands and affect them.
Some tips to keep up your oral health during pregnancy are regular brushing and flossing. This decreases the chances of any food particles to remain in your mouth and keeps it clean. Periodical visits to your dentist so as to clean your mouth and check for any symptoms of gingivitis is very important. Using an antimicrobial rinse during this period will also help you in preventing many infections. If you are pregnant and are in the early stages, now is the time to contact us. (310) 481-0111
