Consequences of Bruxism (Grinding & Clenching Teeth)

Several dental problems, which we develop, are a consequence of sub-conscious actions we perform during sleep. One of the most common ones in that category is Bruxism. Bruxism is the grinding and clenching of teeth while a person is asleep. There are multiple reasons for the disorder – like the chewing reflex not being turned off during the night, orthodontic problems or because of stress.

While we are awake, our teeth gnash and grind against each other mostly during eating, we call it the chewing reflex. This is usually for about 20-30 minutes per meal. When we fall asleep, this reflex automatically turns off. But when it doesn’t, the teeth continue grinding and clenching, and the condition is known as Bruxism. Imagine the stress teeth go under when this activity continues for 7-9 hours straight every night.

Many of us have this problem and we don’t know about it. While it is not immediately damaging, Bruxism is one of the most fundamental cause for serious dental problems like gum recession, tooth loss, arthritis of the jaw, headaches, facial muscle pain, and pain in the jaw.

Once the problem becomes advanced, it needs serious intervention, but things needn’t go that far. The first stage of treatment is to identify the problem. Once ascertained, the easiest form of treatment is a Night Guard, which is a piece of special grade plastic that is customized according to the jaw and teeth shape of the patient. This night guard is fitted either on the lower jaw or the upper jaw, and that puts an end to the problem as the teeth now grind against the guard instead of against each other. The solution is truly simple and affordable!
