Treatment

Periodontal disease is caused by the bacteria found in plaque and, as the disease progresses, can cause pockets or spaces to form between the teeth.  When this occurs, the gum pockets can become filled with bacteria and tartar, resulting in the inflammation and irritation of surrounding tissues.  Eventually, these irritants can even cause damage to the bone supporting the teeth, leading to unstable teeth and even tooth loss.

As the treatment method required for periodontal disease will depend upon the type, stage and severity of the disease, it is necessary for a patient to be evaluated before a particular course of treatment is recommended.  When the disease is detected during the early stages of gingivitis, it can often be reversed with one or two professional cleanings.  Improving daily oral hygiene routines can also help to reverse and prevent gingivitis.

When further advanced, periodontal disease may require treatment with a special procedure called scaling and root planing.  This is a deep cleaning procedure that removes bacteria and other toxins from deep periodontal pockets and root surfaces.  Other forms of treatment that may be recommended for more advanced stages of periodontal disease include antimicrobial therapy and laser periodontal treatment.  Medications, medicated mouthwashes and electric toothbrushes may also be recommended to help control the disease and to promote healing.
