Orthodontics is a field in dentistry that focuses on the study and treatment of tooth misalignment and irregularities in the jaw that result in malocclusion (or an improper bite). The word itself is derived from the Greek words orthos (meaning proper and straight) and odons (meaning teeth). While early orthodontic practice was designed to treat younger patients in their teens and pre-teens, today’s field of orthodontics sees nearly 30 percent adult patients.
Not only do properly aligned teeth create a more vibrant smile, there are several other benefits as well. Well-aligned and straight teeth are easier to clean and patients with straight teeth typically have better oral hygiene and clearer speech. As techniques and technologies in orthodontics improve, treatments are available for any age of patient; however, the American Dental Association recommends that patients receive their first orthodontic assessment around the age of seven. Orthodontic problems can be successfully resolved more quickly when they are discovered at a younger age.
What problems can orthodontics resolve?
Orthodontics is an incredibly diverse field of dentistry and one that may also be used in combination with maxillofacial or cosmetic dentistry as well. Orthodontics can straighten your teeth and give you a dazzling smile!
Some common conditions best treated with orthodontics include
- Anteroposterior deviations – An overbite (upper teeth are further forward than lower teeth) or an underbite (lower teeth are more forward than upper teeth) are examples of anteroposterior deviations. Simply put, this condition is defined as the discrepancy between closed jaws.
- Overcrowding – This condition is fairly self-explanatory; when there is insufficient space in the jaw for normal growth and development of adult teeth a patient has overcrowding.
- Aesthetics – Orthodontics can also help patients achieve a straight, beautiful smile; even one that has been spoiled by a single misaligned tooth. Indeed, orthodontists can quickly and accurately realign teeth but can also manipulate the lips, jaw, or face to create your ideal smile.

Orthodontic assessment and treatment involves technologically advanced procedures that offer cutting-edge solutions to problems with your jaw and teeth. Assessment usually involves a visual examination, panoramic x-rays, and the study of bite impressions in order to develop a treatment plan that resolves the root cause of the discrepancy.
Once your orthodontist has made a diagnosis, many treatment options are available. The following overview gives you a brief look into the sophisticated nature of orthodontic treatment.
- Fixed orthodontic braces – After a metal or ceramic dental base has been attached to each tooth, a dental wire is threaded through each base. As such, Dr Torabi can gradually adjust the wire to pull the teeth into proper alignment. Once the teeth are in the desired position, the wire and dental bases are completely removed leaving a shining, error-free smile.
- Removable appliances – There are also a wide range of removable dental appliances. For example, headgear can correct overbites; Hawley retainers correct the position of the teeth; and facemasks can be used to correct an underbite.
- Invisalign® - Is completely transparent and removable . Because Invisalign® does not move teeth entirely but rather tilts teeth-not all patients are candidates for this treatment.
